Accident Summary:
UH-1C 66-534 was the light ship in a fire-fly team enroute from Tan An to Bien Hoa when it experienced a total engine failure and autorotated to the ground at coordinates XS922955. The aircraft was being brought back to Bien Hoa in order that the unit's maintenance could check out a seeping servo, seeping transmission line, and seeping tach generator, (items which at this time do not appear to be related to the primary cause of the engine failure. Upon investigation after the crash, all oil levels were within normal limits and no external signs of any major oil leaks were present.) At approximately 0240 hours the aircraft was over the southern tip of Saigon, about halfway to its destination when it experienced a total loss of engine oil pressure signified by the oil pressure gage and the oil pressure warning light. At this point the aircraft commander elected to continue to fly to his destination by flying over a secure highway rather than set the aircraft down immediately in the nearest field or secure road. Shortly after this decision was made, the crew began to smell something burning (like smoldering oil) and the decision to make a precautionary landing was then made. As the descent was initiated for the precautionary landing, a total engine failure was experienced and the aircraft was put into an autorotation. The aircraft impacted on a river bank just 6 feet short of the best field available and sank into mud up to its belly. Darkness of the night was a factor in judgement of closure rate and selection of the forced landing site. The aircraft's chin bubble and forward section of belly hit a high portion of earth on the forward edge of the bank causing major damage to the nose assembly, right and left longerons and both chin bubbles
