Accident Summary:
ON 25 FEBRUARY 1971, GUNSHIP 027 DEPARTED CHU LAI AT 1830 HOURS TO DO STANDBY DUTY AT HAWK HILL FOR THE ^196TH BRIGADE^. THE SHIP ARRIVED AT 1900 HOURS AND WAS SHUT DOWN. NO MAINTENANCE OR WORK OF ANY KIND PERFORMED UPON THE AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO A SCRAMBLE MISSION TO PROVIDE COVER FOR AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION AT 0100, 26 FEBRUARY 1971. THE PILOT, ^WO1 GRANT^ STARTED THE SHIP ACCORDING TO STANDARD OPERATIN PROCEDURES, WHILE THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, ^WO1 REED^ PUT ON HIS SEAT BELT AND SHOULDER HARNESS, AT NO TIME DURING THE RUN-UP PROCEDURES DID THE PILOT OR AIRCRAFT COMMANDER NOTICE ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY AS FAR AS INSTRUUMENTS IN THE COCKPIT. AFTER THE AIRCRAFT WAS AT FULL OPERATING. RPM, 6600, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER TOOK CONTROL OF THE SHIP AND COMMENCED TO MAKE A HOVER CHECK BEFORE TAKE-OFF. DURING THE HOVER CHECK THE AIRCRAFT BLED DOWN TO 6300 RPM, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER SET THE SHIP DOWN TO REGAIN FULL OPERATING RPM (6600), AND AFTER HIS SECOND HOVER CHECK WAS COMPLETE, HE TOOK OFF WITH FULL OPERATING RPM AFTER BEING COMMITTED TAKE-OFF AND JUST AFTER TRANSITIONAL LIFT, THE PILOT NOTICED A DECREASE IN RPM, 6300, AND N1 (NO SPECIFICS) AND NOTIFIED THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER. ^WO1 REED^ THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, AT THE TIME DEDUCED HE WAS HAVEING AN ENGINE FAILURE AND MAINTAINED HIS PRESENT POWER SETTING WHILE REDUCING AIRSPEED. WHEN HE FLET HE WAS TEN (10) FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, HE PULLED A LITTLE MORE POWER AS AN INITIAL PITCH PULL. AT TWO (2) TO THREE (3) FEET ABOVE THE GROUN HE PULLED THE REMAINING PITCH TO CUSHION HIS IMPACT AT WHICH TIME HIS RIGHT SKID HIT A RICE DIKE. THE SHIP DID A CARTWHEEL WHEN HITTING THEDIKE AND LANDED THIRTY (30) METERS FROM INITIAL IMPACT ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, THE AIRCRAFT REMAINED ON ITS RIGHT SIDE, THERE WAS NO FIRE AND ONLY MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES ON THE CREW MEMBERS.\\
