Comments about the web site: Great site, was just searching for info on my cousin Dennis Hamilton and it led me here. Does anyone here remember him (He's on the MIA page)? Was thinking about him because this past August 2001 the Gov requested a sample of his moms dna because they think they found his remains. His folks are in their 80s now.

Comments about the web site: Served with HHC 14th CAB from 10/69 to 3/70. I am a writer, currently writing a fiction story that takes place in I Corps 1968 - 1970. The main character in the story is assigned to the 176th AHC. I would appreciate hearing from former service members that served in and around Chu Lai, especially Minutemen, Muskets, and Blacksmith. Also any former memebers of 16th CAG and 14th CAB; former Rattlers/Fierbirds, Dolphins/Sharks, Hornets/Stringers, Hercules, Boxcars, and any Dust off personnel. The fictional story is based on factual events and units, and takes place from 1968 to 1970.

Comments about the web site: I was in the 176th avn co. from the begining, at Ft Benning and spent all my tour in vietnam at Tuy Hoa,Duc Pho and Chu Lai and Kam Ky In June of 1967 I crash landed with Lowell Hunt and WO Clark in Duc Pho area our chopper was slung loaded out on a chinook.I was at the Memorial srvice for WO Scott killed in action while at Duc Pho it was sad to think he was only in our company for 2-3 weeks Also I saw my name and it was miss spelled it is Keib and not Kieb and I was promoted in Vietnam to sp/5 and did a lot of flying on recovery and repairing chopper to fly back to the manor when I look at all the 1967 pictues and articles it put me back there. i really never thought i would ever hear about this place and people again. Now i am so pleased that I can just step back and tell you all in the 176th aviation company that I am proud that i served my country.

Comments about the web site: This is a correction and update on my last post of a few days ago. After viewing other areas of this site I found my door gunner Gary Alstrand listed and he correctly listed our bird as 451 instead of what I posted the 456. Did anyone happen to contact him? Does anyone have his current email address? Seems that the one here doesn’t work anymore. It is so good to see so many names here that I recognized from the 69-70 eras, Captains Longstreet and Wheeler and others. I have been in contact with Mike Pickles sister Janet as well as Ralph Bigelow’s brother Ken both of who went to fly OH-6’s at the 198th. Ken is trying to find any information about Ralph that is available from anyone here as he is doing a web page for his brother. He is looking for a photo of the Canadian Red Maple Leaf done on the nose of the bird he flew on. Anyone have that picture? He has also forwarded Thomas “Bones” Herrington’s obit to me if anyone wants that let me know. I sent it on to Carl. Has anyone heard from Richard “Rick” Deems or Cliff Fruge? Deems was Smokey’s crew chief 69-70 and Cliff’s bird 333 was damage in a revetment incident at Chu Lai by rocket fire if I remember correctly. dcb "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"

Comments about the web site: My name is Ken Bigelow, Ralph's Brother. I am currently working on a Memorial webpage for Ralph. I'm interested in anything you can tell me about his tour. After Ralph was made Aircraft Commander he added nose art on his aircraft. It was a big red maple leaf with the words "Canadian Club". I would also be interested in any pictures of him or his ships (bimap or jpeg images are great). Would you know the call sign he used - Minuteman??? Thank you for taking the time to answer this. Ralph had three brothers and all of us served in the Army during Viet Nam (we were all Canadian). Wayne was an Engineer with the 548th Engr. on LZ Bayonet during this same timeframe. Ralph served from July, 1969 until his death 22 May, 1970.

Be not ashamed to say you loved them though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying, and keep it with your own, and in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind." Comments about the web site: B Co. 1/6th May '70 - June '71. Flew several interesting "Eagle Flights" with 174th. Worked with gunships, I'm sure, from your unit. Also, was in charge of resupply of B Co. for about four months so flew many missions with C's, water, ammo, etc. for B Company. A few memorable flights picking up and extracting (at high speed, jumping hedgerows) DEROSing GI's. I always appreciated the job you guys did. Thank God for "Birds" when I was there.

Comments about the web site: My name is William Wilson. I served with the Minuteman 176th AHC from Oct.1970 to Oct.1971. I was C.E. on Minuteman 313, 667 and 708. Musket 520. One of the many missions I flew on was the infamous Lam Son 719 flight of March 22,1971. Were we lost a bird and her crew. I remember how those of us that flew combat missions whether it was slicks or guns. When we heard that some one was either shoot or involved in some kind of mishap would say "Better him than me". But upon reflection. Even though it was not us but some one else, would we not want to be remembered. Thanks to loyal and gallant friends like Carl Zipperer there memories lives on. It's been over 30 long years, even though it might not seem that long. Our numbers are starting to diminish and we need to reach out to one an other and those that do not know the horrors of war. To not make the same mistakes again. I just want to let all my brothers know at this time of year and in my every day, you are always in my heart and mine. Peace and love to you all. Happy New Year and many more to come. William (jolly) Wilson

Comments about the web site: Sirs, I am married to the niece of CW2 Marion 'Skip' Mark, a member of the 176th Aviation Company, 1st Bn (Airborne), 327th Infantry, 1st Bde, 101 Airborne Div. Skip was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions on 03 Oct 1967 near Chu Lai, RVN. Unfortunately, Skip passed away two years ago from a heart attack, leaving a wife and two children: Jeremy, grown and living in Australia, and Rusty, now 15 yrs old. I have been trying, without much success, to garner more information about Skip's service in Vietnam and particularly the events surrounding his DSC. His parents, widow, and other family members recall that he was originally submitted for the Medal of Honor, but we can't substantiate that claim. If Skip was submitted for the MOH, Peggy has asked me to look into the process of getting his DSC upgraded to the MOH on behalf of his children. I seem to recall one of the benefits extended to the families of MOH recipients is that their children are automatically accepted for admission to one of the service academies. Peggy sent me copies of Skip's DSC citation, his DD 214, and a newspaper article. I have the phone number to the national archive in St. Louis, but I would really like most to hear from and work with members of his unit in Vietnam that remember Skip and the actions surrounding his citation. I am an active duty Air Force officer and 13-year veteran of the Navy, Marine Corps (as a Navy Corpsman), and Air Force, so I am willing to engage this vigorously at every level in the chain of command and pursue it through congressional representatives as well. But in order to make this a reality, I need the help of the outstanding men of the 176th who were there and can tell the story. If you have any information, please don't hesitate in contacting me via phone, e-mail, or mail. Thank you for your time and service to our country. Those of us who serve now will never forget the sacrifices of service made by those who came before us. It is my honor and priviledge to help carry the mantle of freedom that you so gallantly held during your time. God bless America! Very respectfully yours, David R. Andrews, Capt(sel), USAF, MSC 1445 Meadowcreek Ct. Pewaukee, WI 53072 H: (262) 691-2366 e-mail: davidnpatty@earthlink.net

Comments about the web site: I received a phone call from Bob Ellison, thank you Bob, The first contact I`ve had with any one from the 176th, in 33 years ! I was in the 176th. from Jan. 1968 to March 1970. Came over as a airframe repairman. After about six months I went to the Muskets as a door gunner and soon after, with everyones help, crewcheif. I extended twice and was in 176th for total of 26 months. Thinking back on it, I, like you, wonder why. I was on ac744 on May 11,69 when it was shot down, I have a picture of ac603 with notation that I crashed with it in August 69, but I don`t remember that. And I was on ac233, on Nov. 13,69 when we got hit by an rpg and went down in flames, that was the one that woke me up,I wanted out then ! A comment on the story about the 21 Impact Awards and a big Hello to Philip Lee ! I was your crew chief. The only time Philip swore was that evening when McClean broke off and we started firing onto the mountain side. I never saw so many flashes from guns in my time there, Philip opened up with the mini guns and a few choice words. The door gunner with the thick glasses was Dick Thomas. He was the first to see the strobe light ! He wasn`t in the Muskets very long, and I don`t remember what happened to him.I don`t see him listed as receiving a medal at all, but I am positive it was him. Will keep in touch and add more soon. Thanks to all of you for haveing this great web site. Philip Varnum

I remember you crewing 744 and it getting shot down. It must have been 233 that was 744's revenge right ? Wasn't it an RPG in the belly that caused you guys to go down in flames ? Comments about the web site: I served as the team leader to a small five man mobile advisory team (MAT I-58) based in Ha Thanh or Son Ha (former SF camp A-104) from May 70 to July 71. We worked with the Hre Montagnard RF/PF unit there. When the SF departed in June 70, we were the only U.S. for many miles and were totally dependent upon re-supply from the air. I very fondly recall our reliance upon the birds with the callsigns "Rattlers, Dolphins/Sharks, Hornets" and the hooks "Hercules, Boxcars". I salute the consistent courage from the many great men of the 176th AHC and other helicopter units that supported us.

Comments about the web site: When the SF left Ha Thanh or Son Ha (Camp A-104) in June 70, I stayed with a five man mobile advisory team and the US district bunch...to include the Phoenix office. Me and my team worked with the wonderful Hre Montagnard tribesmen in the RF/PF program. We were completely dependent upon resupply and support from the air, and I fondly recall the welcome inbound radio call from the brave men of the 176th AHC. I salute all the fine soldiers from the sky who meant so much to us. Thank you.

Comments about the web site: This is in response to smokie 500 gb test. I patched many whole's in your ship. you guy's just didn't know how to stay clear. A little crazy. Not sure who I am speaking to, but it really struck home when a read the word smokie. I was in nam from May 69 to April 70 176th AVN sheet metal. My working buddies were Bob Cowles, Glen Fritz. Worked the night shift. Even though it was nam I still have some of the fondest memories of my life from there. Not the place just the faces. No matter what the reason for being there, it was a bond of brothers. Was your pilot CPT. Horton? Not sure if that is correct. But I do remember him as being very wild or crazy. I flew a couple of test flights with him and possibly you. Never knew a huy could go vertical. I just stumbled on this site. Bob Cowles had a bout with cancer. All is good now. But he said it was related to agent orange. I didn't realize we were exposed, until now. Anyway I was looking for info on agent orange and found this great site. It really brings back memories. And helps anwser question about some of the guys you wonder about from time to time. Some answers are not what you want to hear. I had heard right after leaving country that Joe Brown had been killed but was never sure until now. What a terrible loss of life. All I can remmeber now is a great warm smile!!!! Comments about the web site: Hallo. No I'm not a veteran.I'm 28 years old only, but I'm interested in Vietnam conflict since I was 12. When the first time I saw the UH-1 HUEY's I felt in love with these beautiful choopers and the huey's crews. Even I live so far away from USA and Viet-Nam, this war and all types of huey's is my passion and hobby. I'm colleting everything what is connected with this topic. Now I have 28 huey's platic models (1:72), 2 (1:32) and many other models and soldiers models from this war.I'm still preaparing more in my free time.Because of NET I can get more news, details, histories etc. and I can Thank You All who serviced there, who interested in this war like me and who remember about all heros soldiers, specially helicopters' hero crews. I belive that all over the world live many people like me who don't let die the past of this war and the memory o the thousends of huey's and the crews who were sacrificed in Viet-Nam. I send to You the best whishes from Poland. Bye Bye...

Comments about the web site: Hello I am looking for anyone who remembers my father 1st Lt. Cecil Wright. He served in Co C 2nd Platoon of the 2/1st Infantry 196th LIB Americal Divison in 1969. He was wounded when his unit was ambushed on March 22, 1969. He is alive and doing well. I would really love to hear from someone who might remember him. Thanks.

Comments about the web site: i was in 2nd patoon, a co., 2/1st, 196th lib, tet 68. i miss jerry a lot. every time a rotor wing goes down or a 'vette goes by, in any part of THE WORLD, i feel the loss. but, i also feel the undying courage and dignity. carl, you lead the survivors, including me and jerry, a 239er. mike denniston (dust offs) had a massive heart attack, and died in three days. nothing is more important than our rotor wing spirit. you men carried me from chu lai to fsb stinson, and brought me (cold) coffee in merrimac cans in the mountains west of da nang. my very closest beechnut and day's work chewing friend, rick randolph, was killed by our own artillery on 28 feb 68. rounds probably out of stinson. has the comanche program been halted? take care. it's a real hassle being winched into a dustoff on a 1/4 inch cable in the middle of a fire fight. take care of fury. allen

Comments about the web site: I am an Australian Viet Vet 1966/67 Infantry 5 RAR in Phuoc Tuy Province. I am seeking info on Aussie's that may have flown with US units - I need a contact to talk to me - I am assisting another Veteran with a compensation claim through our Department of Veterans' Affairs. He claims that he flew with a unit on a temporary "loan" in February 1970. He has a shoulder patch with 15 Swamp Rats (this is how I found you). He claims that he had the oportunity to spend about 3 weeks with the Swamp Rats (illegally). His name is Peter Mundy and he was with 161 (Indep) Recce Flt. There is no Australian official record of this so I was hoping that somebody out there might be able to recall this vet or even if they can recall other Aussies that may have flown with them. (Not Pilots). For his claim to be succesful he needs to substantiate his stories. Looking forward to a response of some sort.

Comments about the web site: United States Marine Corps 1958-1987. Province Interrogation Advisor MACV, 1969-1970 Tam Ky, Quang Tin Province VN. Spent a lot of air time with the 176th AHC picking upon prisoners throughout Quang Tin Province...especially with WO Pickles "Smokey 500", the man who would fly anywhere, anytime, under any conditions. Flew with him about 30 minutes before he was shot down West of Tam Ky one time in 1970 in a Huey resupply bird...an interesting story about that one. Just found out from your web site that he was KIA in 1970 flying a loach...still have his calling card listing his specialties. A fearless pilot who will always be missed. Semper Fidelis, Gene Kaptur, MSgt, USMC, Ret P.S.: Many of your pilots may possibly remember me since I was one of the few Marines who flew with you from Province Headquarters in Tam Ky and I was the ONLY one who carried a M3A1 "Grease Gun" for my entire two and a half years in country. Do you have any reports on his final flight, circumstances, etc?

He was in the U.A.E in 1980. I recieved letters from him then. IF anyone reads this, and you have anyway to contact Philip Lee, please give him my e adress. He may not remember me. I truly understand that. But I have a very old amends that should be made, and being ME, I'm nosy, wonder what he's been up to. so here it is ,one more time. faulkner.w@lycos.com.

Comments about the web site: The following is from military author Robert F. Dorr (Bob). Please pass it along. Bob's excited about his new book: "Chopper: A history of American military helicopter operations from World War II to the War on Terror." by Robert F. Dorr (New York: Berkeley Caliber Books, 2005) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0425202739/002-8693979 -7766448?v=glance "Chopper" is a beautiful, new hardbound book (100,000 words and 100 photos) that covers U.S. helicopter pilots and crews in combat from the very beginning straight up to today's headlines. The cover price is $ 24.95. Bookstores and amazon.com are offering "Chopper" at discounted prices. What's different about this history of rotary wing combat is that the story is told in the first-person, in the words of the men (and one woman) who were there --- from the first, primitive Air Commando R-4 combat rescue in 1944 to a battle between Marine AH-1W Cobras and Iraqi tanks in 2003. There's a new and different look at the battle of Ia Drang Valley in the words of men who flew UH-1D Hueys, and it covers events This is a story of helicopter pilots and crews in rescues, in covert operations, and in straightforward, point-blank fighting. There are extended segments on Medal of Honor missions. The first-person memoirs in this book cover all military service branches. About the book's price: For weeks, amazon.com has been offering "new" and "used" copies for different prices. In fact, ALL of the copies available on amazon.com are in mint, new condition. It's a new book and there are no used copies. This is a $ 24.95 book sold by amazon.com for prices as low as $ 12. You can also get a personally inscribed copy by contacting Bob ---robert.f.dorr@cox.net and sending him a check for $ 28.81 (that's the undiscounted cover price plus priority mail postage plus a penny). If you're planning to do that, send Bob an e-mail message first. Robert F. Dorr 3411 Valewood Drive Oakton VA 22124 robert.f.dorr@cox.net

Comments about the web site: Great site! I collect Pocket patches from VN Helicopter units and have collected for 25 years. I have managed to collect examples of 176th patches with the exception of a 1st Platoon "Dragons" Patch and the service platoon patch. If any member has an original as an extra or one they would sell I would make a very fair offer to get one for my collection, I do not want to post the amount in this message but I am very interested in getting an original example for my collection,Thank you and feel free to contact me.Thank You, Jeff Williams

Comments about the web site: A friend of mine, Richard Dale Jenks, was killed on Dec. 13, 1967. I miss him and would like to hear from his family and/or friends who knew him as Blue. He helped me get through my first year as a military wife, and I have never forgotten his fun loving sense of humor. I'd appreciate it so much if someone out there could reach me so that we could reminisce about Blue. He's left a huge hole in my heart. Thanks.

I'm with the 2-504 PIR, Devils in Baggy Pants,82nd ABN just a few klicks from the Pakistan border. These young men and women are very fine soldiers and I'm honored too be supporting them here and they think our war was tougher than theirs, but they're still in tents. I saw Santa the other day and he said he had the Minutemen and Muskets some real nice gifts on the way, be safe my brothers..Gunner MM468 "Cheap Thrills"

Comments about the web site: I am a USMC vet who served with 2nd MAW stateside from 1971-73. I did this search for my brother Ted George who served with the 176th from 1966-68. He was a door gunner with the Muskets. He was in Nam from Feb. 1967 to Sept. 1968 and was awarded the purple heart, bronze star and numerous air medals. After getting out in 68, he joined the Connecticur National Guard and retired in 2001 and is now living in Milford, Connecticut. I have printed out various pictures and data from the 176th Site for him. He would love to get in contact with his buddies he served with. May God bless you and each of the brave men you served with in Viet Nam. You are all heroes and deserve the greatest amount of respect and reverance. Thank you for your service and sacrifices. Most respectfully, Steve Vasil

We have restored a B model gunship to fly. We have a Phantom F-4 in progress to fly. The H model we have is tail # 69-15372. This helicopter served in Vietnam with the 176th AHC. You can see it on our web site-www.wingsandrotors.org. It also served with the 123rd avn. If you live close, and have time and want to visit, you are welcome. The museum is a 5013c IRS org. We barter and trade a lot of parts, and a lot is through donations. Check the airshow schedule and where we will be in 2006. Be safe. Frank T.
