9-17-70 My AC's were Ed C. 29, Keith Sutherland, Larry F. Blackbart. These
were my best AC's that me ojt on 376. And I became CP after I pulled my bird
out of a hot LZ as Blackbart as my AC. That night when I went to Ed's the
men put me at AT and pinned on me a W1 bar. For that day as I was flying
with Blackbart as a CP the PP was on my guns. I flew in to a cap run south
Chea Lia as we were setting RR and was being taken off. We took fire at 11,
I saw where it came from and I said "BB, you got it." With my hands on the
controls, he said go. And I pulled max power to get out of there. Their were
2 or 3 AK's that were firing at us. So from that day foreth the ACs and Peter
Pilots excepted me as one of their brothers. I was best known fro my ability
to fly and my hot 60. M79, Birp gun, M2 carbing, 16, and my 38.I carried
about 8000 rounds total of amnunition, so I became a one-man gun ship. And
yes Ed Covile and Keith Sutherland and Stew (CC) was with me at LZ Stetion.
AS we were on the pad, I heard a bird comming in and I said to the men "Division
Bird is comming", so we all got our act together standing next to 376 on
our right side, they landed and cut power, but they didn't shut it down.
And Gen. FBRamsey got out, walked over to us and soluted the AC, copilot,
and crew cheif. He got to me as I'm soluting him, he puts his arms around
me and says "Hi Don, I'm your great uncle. Your grandmother wrote me and
told me where you were at and I just had to come see you. I had called the
176th to find out where you were at. So I flew out to meet you. I know how
good the 176th is." And as he stood back and soluted me, he said "I'm glad
to know that your with the best. Come up and see me any time you can." And
I did visit my uncle the Division Commander of the 23 Infantry Americal.

Comments about the web site: Subject: Helicopters pilots, crews, and
maintenance Date: 11/11/98 8:33 AM Central Standard Time VETERAN'S DAY To
all you guys who risked it all for folks you never knew, who whisked wounded
to help in time to save their lives and limbs, who felt a responsibility
to the ground troops who couldn't climb into a bed at the end of the day,
I say SALUTE! You brought more than supplies and support in a firefight.
You flew in hope. I hear you say that the deaths of your friends were
meaningless, but they weren't. They died doing the job they loved, the thing
they excelled at, and for their fellow servicemen. How can that have no meaning?
Folks die for far lesser reasons. Aiding another human being is the greatest
deed of all. You should stand tall. You were young men, kids really, who
pulled a man's load and did the best you possibly could. Find your buddies,
and remember the ones who will never age. Talk about them and share the triumphs
and grief that only you can know. The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots' Assoication
and Vietnam Helicopter Crew Memebers' Association, and many other groups
gather together regularly. Visit a website dedicated to your unit. Contribute
pictures, stories, patches. Leave a sense of who you are and what made you
the man you've become. Many of us care and are interested. We are your children,
wives, brothers and bosses, neighbors, co-workers, parents and pals. History
should be as full and accurate as we can lay it out. Only you have the facts
and first hand accounts. I particulary want to remember members of the 176th
Assault Helicopter Company Minutemen/Muskets/Blacksmiths and hangar rats;
plus any units that they flew in support of, in place of, and with during
their Vietnam service. To Reg Cleve, who died to the sorrow of many; Jerry
Penny who died years later, but before before we could find him; and Carl
Zipperer who honors the best in the buddies he served with. You are good
men. Don't forget that. We haven't.

Comments about the web site: Thank you guys for a true "HOME PAGE"!
I arrived to the unit as a FNG mid June '67 and had my tour cut very short
July 24th when one of the tail rotor blades separated from my slick, taking
a big bite out of the tailboom along with it. We ended up, upside down, about
5k North of Duc Pho. I was flying right seat and left seat was Jeff Huss,
and one passenger was killed. Do any of you reading this happen to remember
me or the incident? I am trying to put the pieces of my memory back together
as the crash and all details of my tour are without recall so far.

friend I hadn't seen in a long time...kidding with a friend at work who knew
him as well, and suggested he try the world wide web...imagine our surprise
when a picture of Jerry Penny pops up, of course we were both saddened to
hear of his auto accident,,,we were civilian friends of Jerry's in California
from a little after he returned from Vietnam till we last saw him in about
'77. We never flew in a chopper with him, but did have some rather interesting
experiences in a Cessna with Jerry at the controls...wheeeeew!!!! Scary,
but what fun. Gone for 18 years...sorry once again to hear that....he'll
be missed, he was a great guy!!!

and the 6/32 Field Artillery 1969 to 1971. Roamed all of II Corps from Song
Moa, through the Central Highlands, to Bam Me Thuot, and to the Cambodian
Dance in May of 1970. I read one of your guestbook entries where a guy stated
"sometimes I wonder if my tour was a dream or reality". No one could have
stated it better. I noticed on your home page one of the shoulder patches
was of the 1st Aviation Brigade. I remember those guys. I remember seeing
that patch. I recall the times sitting in the door of that slick in full
ruck with my skinny legs dangling above the skids, my left arm wrapped around
that aluminum pole and the door gunners right leg simultainously. That was
a technique I learned in order not to get my 125lb 20 year old Black butt
sucked out of that chopper as it was running nose down full blast across
those tree tops inserting us into the LZ. (MAN O MAN !! Like a technicolor
dream). I remember walking rear security on CA (combat assualt) in Li Hong
Phong Forrest. The lead element suprised a couple of bad guys in a small
camp and took out after them. This gave me time to sit back on my ruck (at
the ready) and rest my weary bones. Just as I lit that Kool a Loch buzz past
my position. About two seconds later, the most awesome, scary, sobering sight.
One of your Cobras rose up nose down over the ridge staring me right in the
kisser. Right then I got some sense of how Charlie felt staring down the
tubes of those rocket pods. I very quickly flashed about a dozen peace signs
and even more teeth. Didn't need to be a friendly fire victim. On the ground
we use to call those guys the Gnats and the Dragon Flys. What a bunch of
real heros. To this day when ever I run into one of you Doggies, the beers
are always on me. Door gunners get beers, shots, and my girl friends. Tony
Dodson Phila Pa.

Comments about the web site: Great site. I was with A/101 Avn when
we moved into the Manor in May 69 to share accomadations with you guys. We
pitched GP medium tents everywhere there was an openspot in the Manor. I
was present and catching some rays outside my tent the day the Navy decided
to demo their gunnery skills on the manor. We flew the AO vicinity LZ
Profeesional, Tien Phuc and Death Valley from May to July 69. Interesting
experience. Joe Beach aka Comanchero 26

This web page is great. I was in 1st Flight as a gunner. I flew with WO Tilton
for a while, the others I don't remember. I see that Mad Mike Morgan died
in 1970. Does anyone know how? I have lots of pictures of the company area
if you are interested in adding them to this site. Thanks for all your hard
